Spring Into Bulb Season

Plan & Order Now for Fall Planting

By Jacqueline Van der Kloet

Award-Winning Dutch Bulb Garden Designer

Picture yourself in a garden on a sunny April day with cheery tulips dancing in the fresh breeze.

You see a patch of perfectly shaped white blooms with delicate streaks of mauve and pink. You want it for your garden.

“What’s that?” you ask your friend. A Shirley tulip, she tells you. You write it down and plan on ordering it.

In the fall you try to order it, but it’s too late!  All of the bulb companies you try have sold out of Shirley tulips.  You can’t order what you want because you waited until fall!

Lesson learned: Spring is the season to plan your bulb garden and order the bulbs you want.  More than half of on-line and catalog bulbs are ordered in the spring.

You’ll get what you want because bulb farms have their greatest selection available.  Plus they'll be delivered earlier so you can plant earlier.  And the sooner you plant the better.

Here are my spring planning tips:

  • Look for spots in your landscape where bulbs can brighten up or add color.

  • Look for gaps where some bulbs have stopped performing or you didn’t put enough in to begin with.

  • Don't buy too many different bulbs when starting.  Have success with 3-4 varieties first by planting these in larger quantities.  Fifteen snowdrops or grape hyacinths will have no effect.  Better to order 150 of each and 150 daffodils in a color you like and start with those.

  • Order bulbs for your conditions.  Like most plants, sun-loving bulbs won’t grow in shade.  If you have lots of deer or moles, don’t plant tulips.

At TulipWorld.com you can find exactly what you want and receive bulb advice to fill those specific needs for your particular garden.

For example, to find the Shirley tulip, simply use the search tool called "Find Bulbs". The bulb page is packed with useful information such as height and planting conditions on the bulb plus combinations that work well with it.

If you don’t know yet what you want, go to "Inspire Me" for new garden design ideas and see how to make the best of all kinds of gardens.

General bulb knowledge is available at the "Bulb Info" link.  Information on the best place and how to plant your bulbs is easily accessible at the site.  And nothing is overlooked.

At TulipWorld.com you will find only the finest bulbs for your garden.  Through the web site, gardeners from all over the world can access this knowledge database.
